We welcomed Kiwi, a small red eared slider turtle to our classroom. The kids were overjoyed! We explored some early childhood coding robots. I have designed a scaffolded approach to teach young children about the very abstract concept of coding. We started a few weeks ago by exploring some simple “scribble bots” made from an electric toothbrush, a pool noodle piece, and markers. This week we explored KIBO which is a robot designed by researchers at Tufts specifically for young children and how they learn best. This robot is completely screen-free, uses hands-on blocks for codes, and incorporates play. We have a few more steps to go but I hope to culminate this activity with Hour of Code in the spring.
