Wildlife Warrior Week at WHAM is an annual event Dr. Legoria, our science lab teacher, organizes. You were sent an email and a few flyers last week but I thought I'd take a second to do some kinder talk. Sometimes our new parents need/want more information. The kids get to participate in some fun hands-on activities that help develop compassion and knowledge of wildlife. At the same time small donations are collected for some of the various activities. These small donations add up to a big deal for our wildlife rehabilitater, Miss Debbie. She uses the money to help fund supplies and vet visits for injured or orphaned wildlife in our area. She has even helped me when we found a baby raccoon in our back yard. I know the information sent home is very detailed and you are busy so here's a breakdown of how I would participate if I had a child in kindergarten. 1. Wildlife Warrior shirts-These special shirts can be worn every day of Wildlife Warrior Week. Buy a size up and use the same shirt again next year. Shirts are available for purchase in the office (first come-first serve). Or you can buy them online here 2. Tuesday we will be on our field trip 3. Wednesday-$2 donation for free dress. Trading Post-Send $1-$5 for your child to buy a little toy. Remember to put the $ in a well labeled envelope. 4. Thursday-Wildlife Warrior Night from 5:30-8 will have lots of fun activities for the kids to participate in. We have been so fortunate this year to have dozens of monarch caterpillars! The kids have been monitoring, observing, tagging and taking care of the caterpillars. The kids are making sure there is enough milkweed (food for monarch caterpillars) and releasing the butterflies. Now our butterflies become part of an amazing monarch migration that travels from Mexico to Canada every year. Learn more at the links below. Plant some milkweed in your yard in the spring and these amazing creatures will visit your yard to lay some more eggs. |
