It hasn’t rained on Egg Drop Day in over 10 years- until today! We took the fun to the gym and it went even better than expected! I could only get a few videos. I wanted to post them so you could see all the fun. How lucky are we to have a real bunny visit us while we are learning about rabbits! We have been learning about spring plants and seeds. The kids got up close and personal with some great garden helpers-WORMS!
At their final home meet the LSU gymnastics team asked for our kindergarten kids to sing the National Anthem! Here's a few pictures from the event.
This year our STEM night focused on pollinators. In the library the kindergarten teachers prepared a fun activity. Each family was able to visit and engineer a net for containing caterpillars. I have a caterpillar net but how do I get a monarch caterpillar? Well you won't believe how easy it is. Take the milkweed you planted at school and place it in your yard. Or go to the garden nursery near your home and buy a milkweed plant. If you have milkweed in your yard you are guaranteed to have a monarch butterfly visit and lay eggs on your plant. Then you wait for the caterpillars to hatch. Leave the eggs on the plant outside to hatch. Bring the caterpillars and some milkweed inside to watch the life cycle unfold in front of your eyes. Remember to give your monarch caterpillar fresh sprigs of milkweed as often as they need it. You can put a little stem of milkweed in a small cup with a bit of water and place it inside the net. Add a little paper towel around the top of the cup to keep your caterpillar from falling into the water. Caterpillars can't swim. As long as there is milkweed your caterpillar will not leave the net. When the caterpillar has eaten enough milkweed it will crawl to the top of the net and create a chrysalis. The chrysalis is the pupa stage of the butterfly. Moths make a cocoon, butterflies make a chrysalis. The butterfly will form inside the chrysalis. When the chrysalis turns what appears to be black (but is really clear) you are about to witness a miracle. Your butterfly is about to emerge! Once the butterfly emerges allow it to hang inside the net for several hours before releasing or touching. The wings need ample time to dry and strengthen. You will know it's time to release the butterfly when it begins to flutter and fly about in the net. Below are some pictures of a few families with their nets. |
