We are practicing our perseverance with a fun STEM Challenge! The kids worked in pairs to build a stronger coconut trees for the alphabet! This week we had a class visit from The art teacher’s own “Interrupting Chicken!” It was good timing since we just read the book. Of course when the little chicken came to school he was much better behaved than when he’s at home. Apparently he crows a lot at home but barely made a peep at school. Through out the year the kids will be learning WHAM Habitudes. A habitude is an attitude habit. The WHAM Habitudes include ideas like perseverance, growth mindset, gratitude, and mindfulness. Our staff chose these habitudes due to their impact on our children’s learning and their overall happiness. The past few weeks we have focused on how to have a “Growth Mindset.” I have included a few of the videos we used in class below. We use the following ABC sign language videos to learn and review letter names and sounds. This technique engages the whole child in a fun way by introducing visual aids, a song, and movement to help children learn and retain letter sounds quickly. Using the signs also helps children develop the small muscles in their fingers which help control the pencil when writing. Click here to read more about the benefits of learning the ABC sign language. Click here for a link to download a free sign language poster to use with the videos. (This is also great for little brothers and sisters.) Below is the Long Tutorial with Explanation of each letter and signBelow is the shorter tutorial with pausesBelow is the quick song versionEvery day we “Fix-a-Name” The letters of one child are mixed up. The class has to work together using clues like vowels and capitals to figure out whose name is mixed up. Then I lead a demonstration of proper formation of each letter while the kids are writing on paper. Each child then draws a picture to go with the name of the day. Soon they start to ask each other questions to help customize the drawing. Eye color, favorite color and what do you like are their favorite questions. Then we put all the pages together and send the “book” home with its namesake💓
You up can do this at home using family names, characters from cartoons, video games etc. Just write the name on a piece of paper and then cut the letters apart. |
