Every year my class takes care of monarch caterpillars we find in our garden. We have been giving them milkweed and keeping the little creatures safe. A few weeks ago the caterpillar entered the pupa stage by becoming a chrysalis. Yesterday we watched as the adult butterfly emerged. Below you can see pictures and a little video of our Monarch Release Ritual💓 We are working hard each day to learn the routines and procedures (while having fun) of our reading center time called Daily 5! I love Daily 5 because it allows kids to interact with real books at or above their own level every day for an extended period of time. It seems so simple that kids should have access to books to learn how to read. Traditionally this time was not reserved for books but for worksheets and cute projects. Don't get me wrong I love a cute craft but when it comes to teaching your child to read I know they need actual books. The Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students.
